A Conservative Way to Fill in the Gaps
Inlays and onlays are conservative solutions to restoring partially missing or damaged teeth. They are usually recommended when a medium to large portion of a tooth is missing, or when teeth are not cracked or fractured severely enough to require a dental crown.
Much like a standard filling, an inlay fills gaps within the teeth that have been caused by cavities and decay. They may be used to seal a fracture or repair an old filling that is cracked or damaged. An onlay is more like a dental crown, covering a larger area of the tooth’s surface and used when more extensive damage is present.
Inlays and onlays require significantly less removal of natural tooth structure in comparison to crowns. Much stronger than fillings, inlays and onlays also enable the tooth to bear up to 50-75% more chewing force.
We offer our patients both gold and porcelain restoration materials. For a more natural looking smile, many patients choose to replace metal fillings with porcelain inlays and onlays that are custom made to match their tooth color — rendering them virtually undetectable.
Restoring your tooth with an inlay or onlay not only provides long-lasting strength and a natural appearance — it may help you avoid needing a crown in the future.
